Caldaie del Latte

Not far from the Rocca del Drago, in the same rugged and fascinating landscape of the Aspromonte mountains, lie the mysterious Milk Cauldrons, locally known as “Caddareddi”. These natural geological formations consist of seven rounded cavities, sculpted over time by the erosive power of water and weather.

Their peculiar shape resembles stone cauldrons, similar to those once used by peasants to boil milk. That is where their name comes from. Their smooth, concave surfaces, similar dimensions, and close arrangement make them unique in Calabria’s geological context, and it’s no surprise that they have inspired many local legends and stories.

According to tradition, it was believed that the blind dragon from the nearby Rocca would come here to drink, feeding on the “milk” that miraculously collected in these hollows after rainfall. In some tales, these cauldrons were said to have healing or magical powers, and the milk gathered inside was believed to be used in rituals for fertility or health.

Today, the Caldaie del Latte are an unmissable stop for hikers exploring the trails around Ghorio di Roghudi. The loop trail that connects the two sites — Rocca del Drago and Caldaie del Latte — winds through forests, dry streams, and breathtaking views of the Amendolea riverbed, offering not just a journey through wild nature, but a symbolic passage between myth and reality.
