The Grotta della Lamia is a natural cave located in the municipality of Montebello Ionico, in the Grecanic area of Calabria. It opens at an altitude of about 910 meters on the side of a small valley, a tributary of the Vallone Spedia.
Geological Features
The cave was formed over millions of years when the Aspromonte massif had not yet emerged. Inside, it features sedimentary rocks eroded by the action of seawater, creating an impressive environment with meanders, columns, pillars, and stalactites of various sizes and shapes. The vaults and walls are decorated with fossil shells and remains of other marine animals.
Cultural Aspects and Legends
The name of the cave is linked to the mythical figure of Lamia, a Libyan queen loved by Zeus. According to legend, the heart of Zeus still beats inside the cave, as a testament to his love for Lamia. The cave is still partially unexplored, but local testimonies suggest that its tunnels extend for several kilometers, reaching the center of Motta San Giovanni or the riverbed. In the past, it was believed that there was another cave called 'A Ruuta, connected to the Grotta della Lamia by an underground passage.
