Sentiero del Brigante

The Sentiero del Brigante is a long-distance hiking trail that stretches for about 140 kilometers through the Aspromonte and Serre mountains in Calabria. Created in 1989 by the Gruppo Escursionisti d'Aspromonte (GEA), the trail begins in Gambarie, a fraction of Santo Stefano in Aspromonte, and ends in Serra San Bruno or Bivongi-Stilo.
The trail passes through two protected areas: the Aspromonte National Park and the Serre Regional Natural Park. Along the route, hikers can admire a variety of landscapes, including forests, streams, waterfalls, and historic villages. The trail is divided into seven stages and is marked with red-white-red stripes, identified by the SB logo.
The name "Sentiero del Brigante" (Bandit's Trail) comes from the fact that, in the past, this route was frequented by numerous bandits, including Nino Martino, Giuseppe Musolino, and Giuseppe Pronestì. In 2017, the trail was included in the Digital Atlas of Italy's Paths by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MIBACT).
The trail can be walked, cycled, or ridden on horseback, and it is not technically difficult. It is recommended to split it into at least six or seven stages, with overnight stays and food available at accommodation facilities located near the areas traversed.
