Bova Marina is a municipality located along the Ionian coast of Calabria, within the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria. Founded in the 19th century, the town developed thanks to the initiative of Bishop Dalmazio D'Andrea, who purchased land from the state and distributed it to farmers coming from nearby mountain areas. In 1908, Bova Marina gained administrative autonomy.
Historical and Cultural Heritage
The area of Bova Marina is rich in historical evidence. Among them, the Roman-era synagogue stands out, dating back to the 4th century AD, discovered in 1983 during roadworks. It is one of the oldest synagogues found in Italy, second only to that of Ostia Antica. The site preserves a mosaic floor with Jewish symbols such as the menorah, citron, palm branch, and shofar.
