Cardeto is a municipality located in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, in Calabria, at an altitude of about 750 meters. The village is situated on the right bank of the Sant'Agata stream and has a characteristic terraced layout. The name "Cardeto" may derive either from the thistle plant (cardo) or from the Roman cardo, one of the two main streets in Roman cities.
Historical Background
The origins of the village probably date back to the 10th–11th centuries, when the area was influenced by the presence of Basilian monks. The territory still preserves traces of ancient places of worship, such as the Abbey of San Nicola di Foculica in the Badia locality and the Church of Maria Assunta in Mallamaci, built over a former female Basilian monastery. In 1806, following the administrative reforms of Joseph Bonaparte, Cardeto became an autonomous municipality.
Cultural and Religious Heritage
Cardeto is rich in religious heritage, including the Church of San Sebastiano, the patron saint of the town, and the Church of Maria Assunta in Mallamaci, which houses a marble statue of the Madonna dating back to 1720. The town was significantly damaged by the earthquake of 1783, the 1908 quake, and the flood of 1951.
Language and Traditions
In the past, the Greek of Calabria was spoken in Cardeto, a language that has now disappeared but has left traces in local place names and dialect. The folk group “Asprumunti” is dedicated to preserving the region’s musical traditions.
Economy
The local economy is mainly based on agriculture and livestock farming.
Events and Festivals
On January 20, the feast of San Sebastiano is celebrated with processions and religious events that involve the whole community.
