Condofuri is a municipality located in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, in Calabria. The municipal territory includes several hamlets, including Gallicianò, Amendolea, San Carlo, and Condofuri Marina.
Historical Background
The origins of Condofuri date back to the time of Magna Graecia, as suggested by the layout of the historic center, with a central square facing the main church and all the streets converging toward it. The name “Condofuri” derives from the Greek Konta-Korion or Conda-Chorion, meaning “near village,” likely referring to its proximity to Gallicianò or Amendolea. During the Norman period, the area was part of the Amendolea fiefdom and followed its historical developments. In 1811, with the institution of Districts and Municipalities, Condofuri became an autonomous municipality, including the hamlets of Gallicianò and Amendolea.
Cultural Heritage
Condofuri is home to several religious buildings of interest:
• Church of San Domenico: located in the center of Condofuri.
• Church of San Giovanni Battista: located in Gallicianò.
• Church of Maria Santissima Annunziata: located in Amendolea.
• Orthodox Church of Panaghìa tis Elladas (Madonna of the Greeks): located in Gallicianò.
Of particular note is the Ruffo Castle of Amendolea, which dates back to the 11th century. The fortress, situated on a hill overlooking the Amendolea stream, was a key strategic outpost during the Norman era.
Gallicianò
Gallicianò is a hamlet of Condofuri, located 621 meters above sea level on the right bank of the Amendolea stream. It is known as one of the centers of the Greek-speaking minority in Calabria, where the Greek of Calabria is still spoken today. Gallicianò is often called “the Acropolis of Magna Graecia” for its preservation of Hellenic traditions. Places of interest include the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Orthodox Church of Panaghìa tis Elladas, and the Ethnographic Museum, which preserves tools and objects from the local tradition.

• Feast of San Domenico: celebrated in the center of Condofuri.
